The Legacy of Ty Boyd (1931 - 2020)

Ty Boyd grew up to become a North Carolina legend, an accomplished broadcaster, internationally recognized speaker, and inspiring communications coach for executives from more than 40 countries.

At fifteen years old, Ty Boyd began his career in broadcasting by working for WSIC Radio in Statesville, N.C., his hometown. Later he joined WCHL radio in Chapel Hill while attending UNC. In 1961, Boyd moved to WBT and WBTV in Charlotte, NC. He was one of the city’s best-known radio and TV personalities for 15 years. His morning radio show was number one in sixty consecutive ratings periods. Boyd branched out into television, reaching national audiences as guest host for The Arthur Godfrey Show and as emcee of the Thanksgiving Day Parade for CBS. Ty became an in-demand talent both on and off the air. In 1991 he was inducted into the N.C. Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Following several decades in broadcasting, Ty discovered that nothing could match the electricity of speaking to an audience in person. He left WBT in 1978 to develop his speaking career. Boyd is a founding member of the National Speakers Association (NSA) and later rose to president. Boyd has earned the NSA’s three top honors, including the Cavett Award which is the NSA’s most cherished award to celebrate and honor members whose careers demonstrate the spirit of sharing, guiding, and inspiring other professional speakers. The NSA also honored Mr. Boyd with its Master of Influence Award for making a positive global impact through the spoken word while significantly influencing generations of speakers.

A lifelong member of the prestigious Speakers Roundtable, Ty also received admission into the CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame, which is a lifetime award for speaking excellence and professionalism. This award is reserved to honor professional speakers who have reached the top echelon of platform excellence. In 2018 he received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of North Carolina’s most prestigious honors.
